THE CAPTURE

August 22, 1844

Atlanta, Georgia

Millicent’s wedding day dawned in glorious shades of pink and orange. She wore a dress of satin and lace, a lovely confection that no doubt caused a dozen Parisian seamstresses to lose sleep while they worked to complete the garment in time for the hurried nuptials.

Winthrop Brimm left Spaniard’s Island the day after Millicent agreed to be his wife, and though he sometimes wrote two or three letters each day, he and Millicent had not seen each other since. All Millicent knew was that Winthrop had arranged for her arrival at Brimmfield and was spending quite a lot of money to see that the home they would share was furnished to her requirements.

She rode the bay every day that she spent at Spaniard’s Island and then insisted Papa bring him to Atlanta when the family packed up to return home. Mama fell into a frenzy of wedding plans while Millicent merely stayed out of her mother’s way.

Last night, Millicent had tumbled into bed exhausted, still awaiting Winthrop’s arrival in Atlanta. Unavoidably delayed, his last letter had declared.

A knock on the door signaled the arrival of her breakfast. She gathered her dressing gown around her and went to open the door only to find it was not the maid at all.

“Winthrop!” Her smile was quickly replaced with an expression of outrage. “You cannot see me like this.”

His boot prevented the door from closing. “Just a moment, and then I will go.”

“All right, but if Papa sees you, he will not be pleased.”

Winthrop tilted his head to offer a quick kiss on her forehead. “In exactly two hours, your father’s opinion will no longer hold any weight. Understood?”

Her grin returned. “Understood.”

“So,” he said slowly, “have you missed me?”

“Terribly,” she admitted. “I’ve had to ride alone, and the paint takes great exception at being left behind.”

“So you’re claiming the bay for your own?”

“I am,” she said firmly. “I do hope we will not quarrel about it.”

He leaned in for another kiss, this time squarely on the lips. “We will not quarrel,” he said before stealing yet another kiss. “Do you suppose we can hurry the parson along?”

Millicent stepped back to give him a playful push. “Patience, Captain Brimm.”

Winthrop shook his head. “Judge Brimm, eventually,” he corrected. “At least if my father has anything to do with it.”

“Nonetheless, I will have my wedding day, and it will not be hurried by the likes of you. Now go on with yourself, and I will see you in a few hours.”

Though he affected a look of disappointment, the twinkle in his eyes gave him away. Millicent closed the door and then leaned against it, wondering how in the world she had fallen in love with a man she barely knew.

And yet she knew him well.

She knew he loved horses and the land. She knew he would do anything she asked to make her happy. Most of all, he knew how to capture her attention and keep it from galloping away.
